The Porterville Animal Control Unit has leased the Animal Shelter Facility in Lindsay and is operating the shelter to kennel all animals picked up in Porterville. The Porterville Animal Shelter is open Monday thru Saturday, between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm (closed on Sunday). If you have lost your dog and believe it was picked up as a stray or your animal was impounded, please contact the shelter staff to learn how you can retrieve your animal.
On January 1, 2011, the Police Department hired Augie Gonzalez as the Animal Control Unit Supervisor. He comes to the city with a wealth of experience in management, as well as much energy, enthusiasm and compassion for the animals that come into the care of the Porterville Animal Control Unit.
In 2010, the Animal Control Unit picked up 2,496 dogs in our community. A large number of them were returned to their owners or adopted/rescued. However, the unwanted pet population in Porterville continues to be very high. We strongly urge residents of the community to spay or neuter their pets, in an effort to prevent the high number of unwanted strays running loose.
We provide animal control services to the citizens of Porterville. This includes the enforcement of various ordinances (laws) that regulate animals. There is a requirement that pet owners keep their dogs confined to their property, or keep them on a leash. Additionally, the animal ordinance requires all pet owners to have their dogs rabies vaccinated and be licensed with the City of Porterville. The Animal Control Unit handles the issuance of dog licenses and this can be done for a nominal fee.

In 2010, the City of Porterville purchased land, for the purpose of building a Porterville Animal Shelter here in the community. A design architect was sought and selected to design and draw up plans for the new shelter. However, the economy has resulted in a shortage of budget funds with which to build the shelter. The goal and desire is to someday have our own animal shelter right here in the community to serve our residents and provide excellent care for the animals picked up in the city. The Animal Control Unit will always be available to render prompt and effective services to protect the public and properly care for our animal friends
