Why was the stock market crash of 1929 a problem?
Simply put, the stock market crash of 1929 caused the Great Depression because everyone lost money. Investors and businesses both put significant amounts of money into the market, and when it crashed, tremendous amounts of money were lost. Businesses closed and people lost their savings.
Men and women lost their life savings, feared for their jobs, and worried whether they could pay their bills. Fear and uncertainty reduced purchases of big ticket items, like automobiles, that people bought with credit. Firms – like Ford Motors – saw demand decline, so they slowed production and furloughed workers.
Many of the small banks had lent large portions of their assets for stock market speculation and were virtually put out of business overnight when the market crashed. In all, 9,000 banks failed--taking with them $7 billion in depositors' assets.
Economic downturns hurt the optimistic bullish investors but reward the pessimistic bearish investors. Several individuals who bet against or “shorted” the market became rich or richer. Percy Rockefeller, William Danforth, and Joseph P. Kennedy made millions shorting stocks at this time.
Stock market losses erode wealth in both personal and retirement portfolios. A consumer who sees his portfolio drop in value is likely to spend less.
Business houses closed their doors, factories shut down and banks failed. Farm income fell some 50 percent. By 1932 approximately one out of every four Americans was unemployed.
As stocks continued to fall during the early 1930s, businesses failed, and unemployment rose dramatically. By 1932, one of every four workers was unemployed. Banks failed and life savings were lost, leaving many Americans destitute. With no job and no savings, thousands of Americans lost their homes.
The money stock fell during the Great Depression primarily because of banking panics. Banking systems rely on the confidence of depositors that they will be able to access their funds in banks whenever they need them.
Consumer purchases of durable goods and business investment fell sharply after the crash. A likely explanation is that the financial crisis generated considerable uncertainty about future income, which in turn led consumers and firms to put off purchases of durable goods.
Massive unemployment beginning in the middle of the 1920s led to a drop in stock prices. The collapse of the banking industry led many banks to foreclose on home loans, eventually leading to the stock market crash.
Did the 1929 stock market crash actually cause the Great Depression?
The 1929 crash didn't cause the Great Depression outright, with only 10% of Americans invested in the market, but it lowered consumer spending, caused panic that worsened an ongoing recession, reduced corporations' assets and hurt their future prospects, and contributed to a banking crisis.
In addition to the Federal Reserve's questionable policies and misguided banking practices, three primary reasons for the collapse of the stock market were international economic woes, poor income distribution, and the psychology of public confidence.
The crash affected many more than the relatively few Americans who invested in the stock market. While only 10 percent of households had investments, over 90 percent of all banks had invested in the stock market. Many banks failed due to their dwindling cash reserves.
The Wall Street crash: 1929
The Wall Street crash of 1929 hit the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on 24 October. It is considered the most famous stock market crash of the 20th century, and the greatest crash in the history of the United States.
Stock market crashes often have a major economic impact and can take time for marketplaces to return to their pre-crash levels. The Dutch Tulip Bulb Market Bubble, also known as Tulipmania took place in 1637. Oct. 19, 1987, also known as Black Monday, marked the largest one-day stock market decline in history.
Few would dispute that the crash of 1929 was the worst in history. Not only did it produce the largest stock market decline; it also contributed to the Great Depression, an economic crisis that consumed virtually the entire decade of the 1930s.
What Were the Causes of the 1929 Stock Market Crash? There were many causes of the 1929 stock market crash, some of which included overinflated shares, growing bank loans, agricultural overproduction, panic selling, stocks purchased on margin, higher interest rates, and a negative media industry.
Economic crisis spread from the United States to the rest of the world as international trade declined. Abrupt decline in standards of living occurred around the world. As demand for goods and services fell, many companies were forced to shut down, increasing unemployment.
Students may suggest that the stock market crash was big enough or that the collapse of the farm economy was big enough.) None of these alone was sufficient to cause the Great Depression, with the possible exception of bank panics and resulting contraction of the money stock.
Although it originated in the United States, the Great Depression caused drastic declines in output, severe unemployment, and acute deflation in almost every country of the world.
Who got rich during the Great Depression?
Not everyone, however, lost money during the worst economic downturn in American history. Business titans such as William Boeing and Walter Chrysler actually grew their fortunes during the Great Depression.
The Depression created other deficiencies too: by the time the people born in more depressed states reached their 50s and early 60s, they were less productive and less attached to the labor force than their counterparts who grew up in states with stronger economies during that difficult time.
Black Thursday, Thursday, October 24, 1929, the first day of the stock market crash of 1929, a catastrophic decline in the stock market of the United States that immediately preceded the worldwide Great Depression. That stock market crash (also called the Great Crash) is still considered the worst one in history.
A number of factors contributed to the crash: Economic growth slowed in the first three quarters of 1987 and inflation was rising. Given the recent stagflation experience from the 1970s, investors were jittery. The stock market had declined nearly 10% the week prior to Black Monday which added to investors' fears.
If the price of your stocks drops while you are holding it, you have not lost any money at all. Values fluctuate, but you are holding stocks, not money. It only becomes money again when you sell it. If you sell your stocks for less than you paid for them, only then have you lost money.
