What's the average debt of an American?
The average debt an American owes is $104,215 across mortgage loans, home equity lines of credit, auto loans, credit card debt, student loan debt, and other debts like personal loans. Data from Experian breaks down the average debt a consumer holds based on type, age, credit score, and state.
The average American owed $103,358 in consumer debt in the second quarter of 2023, the latest data available, according to credit bureau Experian.
If you have multiple credit cards and loans and feel overwhelmed by debt, you're not alone. Around 80% of Americans are in debt, and escaping it can be challenging. Moreover, Americans are accumulating debt due to factors like inflation and high credit card interest rates after saving more during the pandemic.
Debt-to-income ratio is your monthly debt obligations compared to your gross monthly income (before taxes), expressed as a percentage. A good debt-to-income ratio is less than or equal to 36%.
Average American Credit Card Debt
The Federal Reserve study does not provide numbers for the average credit card balance per consumer. However, according to Transunion, this figure rose from $5,795 in January 2023 to $6,295 in January 2024.
Around 23% of Americans are debt free, according to the most recent data available from the Federal Reserve. That figure factors in every type of debt, from credit card balances and student loans to mortgages, car loans and more.
Men have 2% more credit card debt than women. Men have 20% more personal loan debt than women. Men have 16.3% more auto loan debt than women. Men have 9.7% more mortgage debt than women.
How Many Americans Are Living Paycheck to Paycheck? A 2023 survey conducted by Payroll.org highlighted that 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, a 6% increase from the previous year. In other words, more than three-quarters of Americans struggle to save or invest after paying for their monthly expenses.
However, 35% of Americans reported that they're in the most debt of their lives. New York Fed data shows that U.S. household debt swelled to $17.5 trillion last quarter, with credit card balances making up about $1.13 trillion of it — a new high for credit card debt.
The Standard Route is what credit companies and lenders recommend. If this is the graduate's choice, he or she will be debt free around the age of 58. It will take a total of 36 years to complete. It's a whole lot of time but it's the standard for a lot of people.
Is $2,000 credit card debt bad?
Is $2,000 too much credit card debt? $2,000 in credit card debt is manageable if you can pay more than the minimum each month. If it's hard to keep up with the payments, then you'll need to make some financial changes, such as tightening up your spending or refinancing your debt.
$5,000 in credit card debt can be quite costly in the long run. That's especially the case if you only make minimum payments each month. However, you don't have to accept decades of credit card debt. There are a few things you can do to pay your debt off faster - potentially saving thousands of dollars in the process.
Jerome Kerviel, The Most Indebted Person In The World, Owes $6.3 Billion To Former Employer, Societe Generale. In a hyper-competitive world where everyone strives to be the biggest, boldest and most famous, no one covets Jerome Kerviel record-breaking achievement. He is the most indebted person in the world.
What percentage of America is debt-free? According to that same Experian study, less than 25% of American households are debt-free. This figure may be small for a variety of reasons, particularly because of the high number of home mortgages and auto loans many Americans have.
Running up $50,000 in credit card debt is not impossible. About two million Americans do it every year.
Having any credit card debt can be stressful, but $10,000 in credit card debt is a different level of stress. The average credit card interest rate is over 20%, so interest charges alone will take up a large chunk of your payments. On $10,000 in balances, you could end up paying over $2,000 per year in interest.
Total Balance (2023, Q4)
Mortgage debt is most Americans' largest debt, exceeding other types by a wide margin. Student loans are the next largest type of debt among those listed in the data, followed closely by auto loans.
Living on credit cards can't last forever, because eventually you'll reach the end of your credit line. Consider it a stop-gap measure, not a permanent plan. “In a lot of cases, you won't know how long your emergency will last,” says Nitzsche. “It could be a few months, it could be a year.
Most consumers have credit scores that fall between 600 and 750. In 2022, the average FICO® Score☉ in the U.S. reached 714. Achieving a good credit score can help you qualify for a credit card or loan with a lower interest rate and better terms.
The Average Debt for People Aged 35-44
Debt levels are higher for households with a head between the ages of 35 and 44. In fact, householders in this age bracket (who have debt) have the highest debt levels of any age bracket.
What is the average credit score for a woman?
Are the Average Credit Scores for Men and Women Different? Not materially. As of 2020 women had an average credit score of 704, while the average score for men was 705.
How Much Do Americans Have in Their Savings Accounts? | ||
---|---|---|
$101-$500 | 12.80% | 10.04% |
$501-$1,000 | 11.30% | 12.58% |
$1,001-$2,000 | 10.60% | 9.81% |
$2,001-$5,000 | 10.60% | 10.64% |
Based on that figure, an annual income of $500,000 or more would make you rich. The Economic Policy Institute uses a different baseline to determine who constitutes the top 1% and the top 5%. For 2021, you're in the top 1% if you earn $819,324 or more each year. The top 5% of income earners make $335,891 per year.
Those living paycheck to paycheck devote their salaries predominantly to expenses. Living paycheck to paycheck may also mean living with limited or no savings and refer to people who are at greater financial risk if they were suddenly unemployed.
Between mortgage loans, credit cards, student loans, and car loans, it's not uncommon for the typical American to have one or more types of debt. The ones who are living debt-free may seem like a rarity, but they aren't special or superhuman, nor are they necessarily wealthy.
