That represents a 4.6% increase in a single quarter, with cardholders shouldering thirteen-figure debt at $1.03 trillion for the first time. In short, that amounts to an average balance of $5,733 per cardholder.
One in five (22%) have at least $10,000 to $20,000 worth of credit card debt. Of those, just over 5% have more than $30,000.
How much credit card debt does the average person have? The average American has a credit card balance of $6,501, an all-time high, according to Experian. That's an increase from $5,910 in 2022 and $5,221 in 2021. Inflation and higher interest rates have led many consumers to put more on their credit cards.

But when you break it down by age, most carry more than that. Those between the ages of 40 and 49 hold an average of about $7,600 in credit card debt — the highest of any age bracket, per TransUnion data provided to CNBC Make It.
49 percent of credit card holders are carrying a credit card balance from month to month — an increase from 39 percent in 2021. Generation X leads the pack, with 55 percent saying they carry a credit card balance, followed by millennials at 51 percent, Gen Zers at 48 percent and baby boomers at 44 percent.
