What happens if you max out student loans?
If the total loan amount you receive over the course of your education reaches the aggregate loan limit, you are not eligible to receive additional loans.
- Plan educational expenses with loan limits in mind.
- Visit your college's financial aid office.
- Consider borrowing PLUS loans.
- Shop around for private student loans.
Total (subsidized and unsubsidized) | Maximum subsidized | |
---|---|---|
Independent undergraduates (and dependent undergraduates whose parents can't get Direct PLUS Loans) | $57,500 | $23,000 |
Graduate and professional students | $138,500 | $65,000 |
If you've already hit those limits, your financial aid office may recommend that you consider alternative options like private student loans or a Direct PLUS Loan.
Students face both annual and lifetime borrowing limits for federal student loans. The lifetime aggregate limit for undergraduate students is $57,500, of which no more than $23,000 can be in subsidized loans.
If those monthly payments look low compared to what most borrowers pay, it's because most borrowers carry a lot more than $20,000 in student loan debt. As of March 2023, the average federal student loan debt in the United States was about $37,720, according to a BestColleges analysis of Education Department data.
Only a small percentage—about 6% of borrowers—owe $100,000 or more. Nationally, the average student loan balance per borrower is $39,032, so if you have $100,000 in student loan debt, you have about 2.5 times the national average balance. But your loan principal is just one part of the problem.
The bottom line
While you can use student loans for living expenses, be smart about how you spend your money. Your loans can cover a lot of things, but not everything. Don't spend more than you need because you'll have to pay back anything you borrow.
43.2 million borrowers have federal student loan debt. The average federal student loan debt balance is $37,088, while the total average balance (including private loan debt) may be as high as $39,981. Less than 2% of private student loans enter default as of 2021's fourth financial quarter (2021 Q4).
While he is exceptional—only 101 people out of 41 million student-loan borrowers owe more than a million dollars—his case highlights the flaws in a student-loan program that offers graduate students and parents unlimited access to federal loans and generous repayment plans.
Does FAFSA only cover 4 years?
Please note that you can receive the Federal Pell Grant for no more than 12 terms full-time terms or the equivalent (roughly six years). You'll receive a notice if you're getting close to your limit. If you have any questions, contact your financial aid office.
If your Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU) equals or exceeds six years (12 full-time semesters), you may no longer receive Pell Grant funding. Similarly, if your LEU is greater than five years but less than six years, your eligibility for Pell the next year will be prorated.
Describe one downside to borrowing the maximum allowed amount of federal student loans. You'll have to take out unsubsidized loans. Those loans will start accruing interest as soon as you accept them, so you will have to make payments on that interest if you don't want it to keep piling up.
There is no set income limit for eligibility to qualify for financial aid through. You'll need to fill out the FAFSA every year to see what you qualify for at your college.
There is a maximum amount of Federal Pell Grant funds you can receive over your lifetime. You can receive the Pell Grant for no more than 12 terms or the equivalent (roughly six years).
Any money left over is paid to you directly for other education expenses. If you get your loan money, but then you realize that you don't need the money after all, you may cancel all or part of your loan within 120 days of receiving it and no interest or fees will be charged.
As for how much money people owe, 15 million people owe $10,000 or less in federal student loans. Another 21 million people owe $10,001-$50,000 dollars, and about 9 million people owe more than $50,000.
Term | Monthly Payment, 5% APR | Monthly Payment, 15% APR |
---|---|---|
5 Years | $377.42 | $475.80 |
10 Years | $212.13 | $322.67 |
15 Years | $158.16 | $279.92 |
20 Years | $131.99 | $263.36 |
Total Student Loan Debt | Repayment Period |
---|---|
Less than $7,500 | 10 years |
$7,500-10,000 | 12 years |
$10,000-$20,000 | 15 years |
$20,000-$40,000 | 20 years |
Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Forgiveness
If you repay your loans under an IDR plan, any remaining balance on your student loans will be forgiven after you make a certain number of payments over 20 or 25 years—or as few as 10 years under our newest IDR plan, the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan.
How many people owe 100k in student loans?
Most undergrads finish college with little or modest debt: About 30% of undergrads graduate with no debt and about 25% with less than $20,000. Despite horror stories about college grads with six-figure debt loads, only 6% of borrowers owe more than $100,000—and they owe about one-third of all the student debt.
- Refinance student loans.
- Apply for federal forgiveness programs.
- Consider income-driven repayment (IDR)
- Make extra payments when you can.
- Explore loan repayment programs.
- Apply the debt avalanche method.
- Get help from your employer.
- Use 529 college savings funds.
Key takeaways. Paying off student loans early can benefit you financially, but it should typically come second to building your emergency fund and retirement savings.
It's not illegal or unlawful to use student loans to make payments towards credit card debt. However, it could be against the terms of your loan agreement. In other words, it won't get you into trouble with the law — but it could cause some issues with your lender.
Can I use student loans for car payments? No, you can't use student loan funds to make car loan payments. Transportation expenses to get to and from school are an approved expense, but you can't use the loan money to buy a car. You can, however, use student loan funds to pay for gas and vehicle maintenance.
