Community volunteers interested in hospice care founded Lower Cape Fear Hospice Inc. in Wilmington, N.C., in 1980. Most of the more than 1,000 patients we serve each day receive care where they live -- in their homes, nursing homes and assisted living facilities. We also offer our services to patients in hospitals. We operate three inpatient hospice care centers: Wilmington, Bolivia, and Whiteville. These acute care centers offer patients and families a serene, homelike setting with large private rooms with room for family. These centers are available exclusively for LCFL patients.Our services are available in Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, Onslow and Pender counties in North Carolina and we also serve Horry, Georgetown and Marion counties in South Carolina.Our Palliative Care team works with patients and their physicians to improve quality of life, identify and aggressively treat symptoms, clarify a patient's condition and prognosis, and set achievable goals that honor a patient's wishes.Free community grief support services for adults are available, and Sunrise Kids offers in-school programs, individual counseling, and summer camps for grieving children.We offer educational presentations, seminars, and conferences on end-of-life care topics.   Team members and volunteers had a wonderful time yesterday participating in the MLK Parade in downtown Wilmington. It was a beautiful day for a parade and to honor and remember such an important American.

  Is 2024 the year you face the elephant in the room and get your advanced healthcare plan in place? Our monthly Begin the Conversation workshops can give you tips on discussing advanced healthcare wishes with loved ones and doctors and steps to document your wishes so they are honored. Workshops are hosted on the third Friday of each month at 10 a.m. at our Home Office, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28403. Participants receive all forms to document their wishes and a free copy of our workbook. There is no cost to attend.

  Hospice volunteer Randy Cook makes a great Santa and an even better human being. Randy regularly visits Shelby Young, a memory care resident at Morningside of Wilmington. Her husband shared the same room with Shelby before he died this past summer. Shelby often got agitated and would bang her fists on the doors, wanting out. Randy would visit with Shelby and get her to identify the many pictures and paintings on the walls of the facility. Randy thought she might benefit from having a robotic cat to help with Shelby's anxiety. LCFL purchased the robotic cat, and Randy wrapped it up as a present for Shelby. She petted and held it. When the cat meowed, she exclaimed," Oh, shut up! You're not hungry yet!"Randy also showed Shelby videos of butterflies and birds on his iPad that she seemed to enjoy.After his latest visit, Randy sent an email to Marti Deeter, volunteer coordinator:" I brought carnations to give to Shelby and the other patients in the Memory Care wing. I was able to pass out flowers to everyone in the common room (I needed more flowers!). The smiles from the patients melted my heart, and many put the carnations in their hair and beamed with smiles during my visit. The staff took pics of me with the patients so they could post them on the Morningside newsletter and website!Shelby was not crying, and we had a nice visit. As with all my visits, I get back tenfold what I put into the companionship.
