Abstract
This chapter begins in 1981, and describes the beginning of Gatewood's career as an attorney in Lexington, and the political climate of the Commonwealth in the early 1980s. It covers Gatewood's preparation for and entry into the race for Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner in the statewide election of 1983. Following this campaign and the family issues surrounding his run, it covers various family issues and Gatewood's divorce, as well as his establishment as an activist for hemp and marijuana. It concludes in 1989, as Gatewood prepares for his first campaign for Governor in the 1991 election.
